Most serious aspirants know the Quant syllabus fairly well by their third month of preparation. What separates a score of 35 from a score of 46 is rarely knowledge. It is the ability to finish a question in forty seconds instead of ninety, and the discipline to leave the two questions designed to eat your time.
Both skills are trainable. Here is a routine that builds them in eight to ten weeks.
Speed does not come from solving faster. It comes from not calculating at all. Spend ten minutes every morning on oral revision of:
• Squares up to 40 and cubes up to 20
• Tables up to 25
• Fraction-percentage pairs, such as 1/8 = 12.5% and 1/6 = 16.66%
Within a month, questions on percentage, profit and loss, and ratio start collapsing into one or two steps because the conversions already sit in your head.
Random practice feels productive but hides weak areas. A cleaner sequence:
1. Pick one chapter and solve 50 previous-year questions from it.
2. Note your average time per question.
3. Move on only when the chapter falls under your target time.
4. Switch to mixed sets after the full syllabus is covered, because mixed practice tests recognition, a separate skill from solving.
If maths was never your subject, begin with our SSC CGL strategy for non-maths students before attempting timed sets.
Keep a plain notebook with three columns: the question, why it went wrong, and the rule you will follow next time. Most students find that 80% of their errors stem from four or five recurring habits, such as misreading "not less than" or skipping units. Fix those habits and accuracy rises without any new study material.
If a question crosses ninety seconds with no clear path, leaving it is a scoring decision, not a defeat. Under the new equipercentile normalisation, a wrong attempt can cost more than a blank one. Knowing the passing marks in SSC also helps you set a realistic attempt target instead of chasing every question.
This judgement develops fastest with guided mock analysis, which is where a good SSC Coaching in Delhi earns its fee: a mentor shows you which attempts cost you marks, something self-study rarely reveals.
Give the routine eight weeks before judging results. Speed built on memory and error-tracking stays with you in the exam hall. Speed built on panic does not.
Two to three with proper analysis beat six without it. Analysis time should roughly equal attempt time.
The questions are lengthier, and the sitting is longer, but the chapters are the same. A strong Tier 1 base carries over directly.
