Ask a DSSSB aspirant why they chose this exam and the first answer is usually "a secure job". Fair enough. But very few candidates can explain what the salary slip actually looks like, or how a PRT becomes a Principal over a career. Knowing the destination clearly makes two years of preparation feel far more worthwhile.
Delhi government school teachers are paid under the 7th Pay Commission matrix. The starting basic pay by post:
• PRT (Primary Teacher): Pay Level 6, starting basic pay ₹35,400
• TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher): Pay Level 7, starting basic pay ₹44,900
• PGT (Post Graduate Teacher): Pay Level 8, starting basic pay ₹47,600
These are starting figures only; the basic rises with annual increments. Not sure which post matches your qualifications? See how the PRT, TGT and PGT roles compare before you decide.
On top of basic pay, a Delhi government teacher receives:
• Dearness Allowance, revised periodically
• House Rent Allowance at metro-city rates
• Transport allowance, medical coverage and earned leave
• Retirement benefits under the applicable pension scheme
Together these usually push the in-hand salary of a newly joined TGT comfortably above what most private schools in Delhi offer, and the gap widens with every DA revision.
Growth follows a known path, through departmental promotion or by clearing the next DSSSB exam yourself:
1. PRT to TGT
2. TGT to PGT
3. PGT to Vice Principal, then Principal
A TGT who keeps studying can reach PGT years ahead of the seniority queue. The full route, including eligibility at each stage, is covered in our guide on how to become a government teacher in Delhi.
Your subject, eligibility, and target level decide which paper you should be solving today. B.Ed graduates aiming at Level 7 can start with our DSSSB TGT coaching programme, while candidates still weighing their options can speak to the team behind our DSSSB coaching in Delhi to map qualifications to the right post before spending a single month in the wrong direction.
A DSSSB post is not just a job; it is a thirty-year career with a predictable, rising income. Prepare for the post you want in year ten, not just the one you can get this year.
Q1. Does a PRT need CTET?
Yes. A valid teacher eligibility test is part of the eligibility for teaching posts in Delhi government schools, alongside the required academic qualifications.
Q2. Is the salary the same across all Delhi government schools?
Yes, pay is set by the pay matrix for the post, not by the individual school.
